Gardening today is not just confined to the outdoor space in your lawn. There is this concept of indoor gardening that is fast catching up. Just as an outdoor gardener has to learn the basics of gardening before he/she can start growing his/her favorite plants, similarly there are a few rules of indoor gardening that every gardening enthusiast should familiarize himself with. In this article we shall explore the ways and methods which can help indoor plants grow better.

Lighting Requirements

Indoor plants often cannot stand strong blazing sunlight while there are others which cannot thrive in low light conditions. And then there are indoor plants which prefer low light and shady cool places. You have to identify the needs of each type of plant. Many experienced gardeners feel that natural light can be replaced by artificial lighting to benefit the growth of indoor plants.

Plants with low light requirements can be kept in shady cool corners. Plants requiring moderate amounts of light can be kept near sunny bay windows or French doors.

In short, if you want your indoor plant/plants to grow properly and healthily, you must provide it with adequate and sufficient amount of lighting depending on what kind of lighting requirement it has - whether very high or high or medium or low or very low.

Material of Pot

When you plant your indoor plants in pots made of clay (a porous substance), the water can evaporate fast and so you shall have to water the plant more frequently. If you don't have so much time on your hands, then nonporous plastic containers can reduce your load.

However, since water can't evaporate from nonporous containers, the water often remains stuck inside the pot. And this results in slow decomposition and rotting of the roots of plants that ultimately leads to the death of the plant. So you have to choose a pot wisely.

Size of Pot

Even the pot size is of vital importance as it can affect the rate of growth of any indoor plant. The size of the pot or container should be directly proportional to the size of the plant, as otherwise it won't look balanced.

When you plant a large indoor plant in too small a container, there is a lack of adequate space for the soil as well as lack of room for the roots to grow. Such a mistake will make your plant droop soon. Besides, a small plant in too big a container looks rather jarring and idiotic.

It is to bring that added dimension of beauty in the living room or office space that people have taken to indoor plant gardening by hordes. If you follow these simple steps, it will ensure the health and vibrancy of your much loved indoor plants.

When buying house plants whether it is from Lowes, Home Depot or a local garden center there are several things to consider. Many people just pick up a house plant without giving any thought, especially if the cost is low. But think about this, every house plant you purchase can give you years of enjoyment if it is properly inspected before you buy. Take time to choose a perfect house plant. If you hastily buy a house plant, it has the potential of causing devastation to your other house plants. And one rule to always abide by is never buy plants when you are in a hurry, that's a gardening tip everyone should heed.

Take the time to inspect the leaves on the house plant for pests. Aphids, spider mites and scale will not only wreck havoc on this house plant but on your others as well. And be sure to look under the leaves and at the nodes where many pests thrive. Here is what to look for on your potential house plant:

Aphids appear as small green or black insects, usually found on buds and new growth. These insects suck the juices out of house plants, and also secrete honeydew.

Spider mites are small insects, which appear as small white specks, usually on the undersides of leaves, or on flowers of the house plant. Spider mites will form webbing, like a spider's web around infected house plants. The spider mites will be visible in the webbing as white specks.

Scale looks like tiny, brown, oval-shaped bumps visible on the house plants leaves and stem. The scale is actually a protective covering which protects the insect. Scales produce honeydew, a clear sticky substance which can be seen on affected house plants.

You may want to search the internet for other gardening tips on how to treat these pests if one happens to infect some of your house plants.

If the house plant seems too big for the container, pass it by, it is likely to be root bound. Remember bigger isn't necessarily better. I always pull a house plant from it's container to check the root ball; reputable stores should allow you to do this. If the house plant is already root bound you will have to open your wallet not only for the plant but for potting soil and a new container. Then YOU have to re pot it and hope it will continue to be healthy. If you don't mind this, then by all means buy the house plant. If you are going to re pot you may want to look at the self watering containers that are available now. These are great for someone that travels and isn't around everyday to check the soil.

Examine the container of the house plant for cracks. Be sure the container will harmonize with your existing house plants containers. Try to purchase plants by shape and height when using the house plant for groupings in and around your home. Keep the small tag that is attached to the plant in a notebook so you will always have the directions on the plants needs. This is a really good gardening tip!

Now you know the secrets of buying spectacular house plants.

Happy Gardening!

Seven Tips To Help Your Indoor Plants Grow Better

Indoor plants are a very popular part of our modern landscape, as they add gardening beauty and extra oxygen into our homes, offices or other areas of living. Yet, often many shy away from growing them exclaiming, I just do not have a green thumb and they always seem to die! Certainly, anyone can learn to take care of houseplants in a proper manner if they have the desire to do so, but many just do not know how to care for them correctly. Let us now explore some ways that we can care for our houseplants and even increase their growth.

Gardening Is Not Just For The Garden

Just as gardeners must learn the basics of gardening, those who want to have houseplants indoors must learn the proper way in which to care for them as well.

Tip #1

Keep your plants clean. Indoor plants tend to become dusty over time, accumulating and filmy layer that makes them look dull and unattractive. When the leaves of the plant are cleaned, they will grow more favorably. You do not need an expensive solution to clean them, just take a damp cloth and gently rub the surface of the leaf.

Tip #2

Fertilizing plants is essential, yet indoor plants do not require as much as outdoor. During the spring and summer months, fertilizer should be applied more frequently that when the plant enters a resting stage in the winter months.

Tip#3

When fertilizing indoor plants, using a complete fertilizer is preferred, as it contains nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium, which the plant needs. Gardening your indoor plants is easier with these types of fertilizers that contain all necessary nutrients.

Tip #4

Choose an appropriate size container for your plants. When the containers are too small or large for the plants, they do not look balanced and they do not grow as well. There should be adequate room for the soil and roots, however.

Tip #5

Clay potted plants require more frequent watering than do nonporous containers. Nonporous containers do not allow water to evaporate, thus reducing the need for watering as much.

Tip #6

Adequate lighting is an important and vital gardening aspect in the growth our indoor plants. Plants vary in their light requirements, so care should be taken to choose those plants that most suit your home lighting environment, whether low, medium, high, or very high.

Tip #7

Artificial lighting may be beneficial for gardening your indoor plants, in order to replace the natural light, especially for plants that require more than the low light standard.

Indoor plant gardening can bring an added dimension of beauty into your home or office by following a few simple steps to help keep your plants vibrant and alive.
