Natural Mosquito Repellents

We all know that mosquitoes are pests. None of us likes being bitten by them. Most people say 'bitten' although this not accurate. 'Stung' is also not true. What the mosquito is actually doing is taking some of your protein in the form of blood though her proboscis, so that her eggs will have something to feed upon while they are hatching.

In consequence, your blood is supplying the albumen (the 'white') of the mosquitoes' eggs. It therefore follows that it is only the female mosquito that 'bites'. In the course of sucking your blood, the mosquito squirts some juices into you. It is not fully understood what these liquids contain, but one is an anti-coagulant to keep your blood fluid and another might be a pain-killer so you do not feel the proboscis entering your pore. Some think that there might also be an antiseptic, but it is not accepted by every one.

Some mosquitoes also introduce other parasites into you, which can result in diseases like malaria, dengue, yellow fever and Japanese jungle encephalopathy. Mosquitoes are to blame for killing millions of people every year. Luckily the fluid that they inject comes from another source other than where they store the blood they have already taken, otherwise they could distribute AIDS as well.

Having said all that, another indirect cause for alarm is in the deterrence of mosquito bites. The single most effectual way of preventing mosquitoes landing on you is spreading mosquito repellent on your skin, and the most successful mosquito repellents contain DEET. However, it is now considered that the regular use of DEET can cause neurological issues. Consequently, it worth looking for natural mosquito repellents.

Regrettably, there is no mosquito repellent as reliable as DEET, but some combinations of treatments are nearly as effective. For example, some people say that mosquitoes are drawn to people who have eaten bananas, so you could avoid bananas if you are nearby mosquitoes. Others say that mosquitoes are less likely to go for people who have eaten garlic or Yeastvite or Bovril.

Mosquitoes abhor the smell of lemons, so a local application of lemon juice is very efficient although the effect only lasts about thirty or forty minutes. However, there is a plant called the citronella and this deters mosquitoes equally as well. The citronella does not smell of lemons unless it is disturbed, but then it is very aromatic.

Grow them in pots on your window sills, on your deck or on your patio. The wind blowing through them is sufficient to release the smell. You can also collect the dead leaves and put them in your pillow. You could also rub green leaves straight onto your skin.

There are quite a few natural mosquito repellents, but they do not all work for everybody and nobody knows why. One theory is that diet and alcohol affect your appeal to mosquitoes. It is also possible that mosquitoes in different areas like different types of people, so it is always worth asking for local advice.

Bonsai Care ? the Right Environment

Taking care of a Bonsai tree is very rewarding and enables you to enjoy and appreciate owning a healthy bonsai tree for many years.  Bonsai care is time well spent.

Temperature

Why is temperature important for bonsai?

During winter months it is vital that you keep your new indoor bonsai warm -- Not hot -- but warm, somewhere between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Where your bonsai falls on this guideline depends on where your bonsai is from "originally" and by this I mean where in the world your bonsai is indigenous... the warmer the native climate, the warmer the area in your home it should be located.

How can temperature be monitored?

The thermostat on the wall is a good place to start. However, a small thermometer can better monitor the actual temperature of the location where the bonsai tree is located in. Most garden centres will have small thermometers available for a reasonable price and purchasing a couple is a worthwhile investment, especially if your indoor bonsai are located in a couple different areas of your home.

What is helpful to avoid temperature fluctuation?

Doors, windows, fans, heating systems and draughty hallways will all affect the actual temperature of a particular area. It is important for the health of your bonsai to be maintained at stable temperature. A sudden drop in temperature, as well as, a sudden spike in temperature can injure your indoor bonsai trees. Indoor bonsai should not be kept near a door that is frequently opened during winter months to avoid harmful cold drafts. It is important that you read the care guide that comes with your bonsai to help establish the best environment to maintain a healthy and thriving bonsai.

Air Circulation

Why is air circulation important for a bonsai?

A location with adequate air circulation is very important for the long-term health of your new bonsai. The life sustaining process of photosynthesis requires an unrestricted exchange of fresh air and stagnate environmental conditions could compromise your bonsai's ability to continue its photosynthetic processes, by clogging the pores or stomata, located on the bottom of leaves, which bonsai trees use for this vital air exchange, through dust and debris accumulation.

What else is air circulation responsible for?

A closed or confined space is the perfect environment for pests and disease, two of the most terrible enemies of bonsai trees. The regular movement of fresh air helps prevent pests, like spider mites, from establishing their webs and infesting and damaging your bonsai trees. Air circulation also assists your trees in the transportation of essential fluids from the roots to the leaves, by osmosis, which is a vital process. Air also prevents possible root rot conditions, from soil saturation, by assisting in water evaporation.

How can air circulation be improved for a bonsai?

If your bonsai is kept indoors or inside a greenhouse, you might consider leaving a door open, or cracked, and a fan, or fans, running. Spraying and misting your bonsai off regularly will help to remove all dust and debris from the bottoms and tops of leaves, allowing your bonsai to "breathe" freely and to continue its photosynthetic processes.

Pests and Disease

How can I prevent pests & disease?

When working to prevent the possible injury or death of your beloved bonsai, the best defence is a strong offence.  Put simply – do the obvious - keep your bonsai clean, dust and debris free and cleared of fallen leaves and flowers.  Ensure there is sufficient lighting as well as good ventilation and lots of fresh air. A healthy bonsai tree is without a doubt the most important preventative of pests and disease.

How can I treat pests & disease?

Unfortunately, even the best cared for bonsai can come across some type of pests or disease over the months and years.  The first thing to try to change is your bonsai's current environment. This technique is the simplest and safest. Quite often a change of location can help an struggling bonsai tree and if it does not, at the very least, you know that your bonsai's problem is probably not environmental.

The second incremental step would be to try, if possible, to introduce biological controls such as ladybugs. Ladybugs are of no danger to your bonsai and they will eat nearly all pests that are. Of course, this technique is limited to outdoor locations.

The third incremental step would be to use chemicals, also in levels of increasing toxicity. To start, you can try spraying a very mild solution of warm water and liquid dish soap on your trees. This technique is an excellent way to prevent a wide variety of diseases and helps in discouraging many types of pests. Multiple applications may be required to achieve and maintain a healthy bonsai, but the rewards will far out-weigh the efforts.

The fourth incremental step would be to try using a mild insecticidal soap. This multi-purpose soap derivative offers effective control over most pests. This type of insecticide is one of the mildest and safest, for humans, animals and bonsai - something of a vital importance, especially if you have children and pets.

The incremental step of "last resort" would be to use an actual "chemical" spray – i.e. an insecticide. It should be handled carefully and used as per manufacturer's instructions.

Gardening is a very popular hobby especially among homeowners, which means the over-thirties to be honest. A nice-looking garden definitely does make a house look better. However, bedding plants and fruit trees can be quite expensive, so a lot of gardeners want or already have some form of greenhouse so that they can propagate plants themselves and grow more exotic flowers and fruits.

It really depends on the kind of greenhouse you have and where you live, but many greenhouses can be 'adjusted' to grow most kinds of plants from around the world. Global warming has helped in this respect as well. In most places, you can grow grapes from France or orchids from Thailand where normally such plants would die outside.

Therefore, having a greenhouse is a bit like keeping a tropical fish tank. The gardener has brought those plants to a part of the planet where they cannot support themselves. They should not be there, so it is up to the gardener to create the circumstances in which those plants can thrive. This has mostly to do with aeration, temperature control, humidity and lighting.

Lighting is especially important in the winter in the temperate zones, because the period of sunlight can be as low as two or three hours and the quality of light can be very bad. Just because it is bright enough for you to see where you are going does not mean that it is light enough for a plant to nourish itself.

Light in the tropics is always bright for most of the day and there is possibly only an hour difference between daylight hours in the summer and the winter. Usually there are about twelve hours of light and twelve hours of darkness.

Obviously, this means that is likely that you will have to supply some sort of artificial lighting if you have a green house. I have never seen a greenhouse in the tropics.

Which kind of greenhouse light you buy, really depends on the type of plants you propose growing. If you want tropical orchids, for instance, you will need a high level of humidity, which means that your light will have to be water-resistant or even waterproof.

Another aspect to keep in mind is the photo period - the length of time you will have to provide light. This could be as much as twelve hours at a stretch in the winter, so you will have to have a light that can cope with that without becoming over heated

Different lights produce different wavelengths of light, that is light from different parts of the spectrum. These different wavelengths of light yield different results, so you will need to know what you want to achieve before you can buy a greenhouse light. Spectrum colours are good for promoting the growth of orchids, but you will have to do some research, once you know what you want to grow.

In conclusion, if the greenhouse light is to be used for many hours a day, look out for an energy efficient light. It may be more expensive, but it will pay for itself. Cheaper lights often waste energy by generating heat, but more heat is not always a good idea. It is far better to control the temperature separately.

A Nice Way To Bring Back Nature To Your Apartment

Life in the big city can be a wonder. But, there would come a time that all you can see is concrete walls and towering buildings that you tend to miss nature or even want to see a single tree on the windows of your apartment. Well, how about bringing nature right inside your apartment. You can always add plants.

Plants are a very nice addition to your home decoration. Not only that, select plants that have a dual purpose. They should serve not only one purpose but two which is for decoration and for other purpose like a healthy purpose.

Plants like the aloe can be a great way to heal your burns. They give off extracts that help the skin heal a lot faster than usual. The Chinese Evergreen also has properties that lower allergens in the air making it easier for you to breathe.

There are a lot of plants that are very good to your health and are also great addition to your overall decoration.

Sometimes, when we have plants over at our place, it will require a certain amount of time to maintain. For some who are always on the go and still want to have a more natural look, there are a lot of plants that do not require a lot of time to maintain. Plants like the Aspidistra can be a great addition.

The cactus is also another great plant that requires less maintenance. They come in a myriad of sizes and shapes but there will also be problems regarding cactus. They might prick your child or pets in the process.

Ask for some great advice on how you can bring in plants inside your home that are not poisonous or dangerous to your animal companion. For example, poinsettias are very dangerous to animals so ask around and see some plants that are great for both you and your pet.

Whether you want to grow a lot of green plants inside your apartment is up to you. As long as you are comfortable and you can help keep your family healthy and safe.

Besides gardening, the author also regularly gives advice regarding binoculars compact and marine binoculars.

Even though houseplants are kept inside the house, they too require the same basic necessity as any other plants found on the outside in order to survive. This includes water, soils and lights.

Providing your houseplants with water and soils are easy, the most difficult and tricky part of having a houseplant is actually providing them with sufficient light. This is because most of them are placed in areas where it might not get enough lights throughout the day, if this is the case for you and your houseplants, there are always artificial lights that you can turn to in order to provide them with this essential.

When choosing the light bulbs and lamps for your plant, make sure to choose colors that have the full spectrum of light, in order for full development. If your plant grows only under red light, it'll often be long and tall but not strong enough as compared to a more proportionate growth under the white light, since it consists of the entire spectrum.

The thing to know when using incandescent bulbs are to make sure that they are not placed too closely to your plants, as this runs the risk of over exposure of heat and thus subsequently killing your plant. Heat is a big factor to consider when you choose these lights, and the same goes for halogen light.

Halogen light should only be used for showcasing purposes and not suitable for the growing and nurturing of houseplants. They are generally stronger white lights than your normal bulbs and therefore once again placements of these bulbs are important.

On the other hand, the best form of lights you can give your houseplants is lights from a fluorescent lamps, this is because they have the full white spectrum and often can artificially create a day like environment for your plants, which gives them the best possible growth development.

Sometimes if you find that some of your houseplants are dying, even you have used fluorescent lamps, then perhaps you can try adding a mirror to reflect the sunlight from the outside, this will allow you plant to get the maximum amount of light they need.

The placement of these artificial lights are important and should be thoroughly considered and planned out before implementing them, they can either help the growth of your plant or kill your plants if you are not careful!

The air ventilation within your home and your kitchen area is important as they can affect your health negatively, thus you should implement commercial exhaust fan to keep your home well ventilated! Find information and discounts on various commercial exhaust fans here!
