I have a black thumb and have been known to kill a cactus from UNDER-watering it. I want to give plants another chance and was wondering what kind of indoor plants are hardy and relatively easy to maintain. Thanks.
Hi. I've moved into a new home in the last year and have some very nice indoor trees. A few large ficus and gorgeous rubber tree. I live in a town house with very low light and bad window angles. My ficus is dropping leaves and my rubber tree is drooping It's much worse now in the winter.
I've moved them to the brightest spots and given them plant food but nothing is working.
Thanks for any advice.
You can buy a grow light(flourescent) at wal mart for 9.95.....I move my herbs indoors at winter..or take cuttings and plant indoors under flourescent light...Ficus take very well to flourescent lights as well... Being in north Florida..we bring our pot/root bound ficus indoors in the winter..and they do well..here is some info on ficus..and then a picture of my herbs..the light on the herbs is white, bought at wal mart as mentioned above..but the walls are lavender in the "grow Room"...so it appears to be purple lol..
Have you ever seen a rex begonia? There are many different varieties and the leaves are a work of art! They range in color from deep plum to pale silvery green and every possible combination in between. You can mix several together for a beautiful display.
To grow your bonsai bigger it needs optimal growing conditions. A free draining soil will help a lot, this is what basic bonsai soil does. You should fertilize it at half reccomended strenght every 2 weeks, go for a high nitrogen fert in the spring, balanced fert through the summer, and low nitrogen in fall. The more light the better, look into getting a desktop lamp with the bendy neck and stick a 40W or higher compact florescent bulb in there then place the lamp 2-4 inches from the top of the tree, also get a plug in timer and run it for 16hrs on 8hrs off. During late spring, summer, and early fall, if at all possible put it outside, it will get way better lighting outdoors than you can provide inside. Get a shallow tray fill it with gavel, put water in the tray but don't fill over the gravel, put your pot on top of the gravel, make sure the pot doesn't touch the water, this will help with humidity. Besides that don't prune it for a while, just let it grow...good luck
